Best Online Master’s in Genetics Programs
Your genes determine more than your eye and hair color. They can also contribute to the cause of many diseases. Geneticists study genes to find cures, make advancements, and diagnose various diseases.
Not to be confused with genetic counselors (i.e., professionals who only need a master’s degree in genetic counseling to enter their field), medical geneticists are doctors who need specialized training in diagnosing and treating genetic disorders. While you can find some positions in the field with a master’s degree, a genetics master’s program is primarily designed to prepare you for a Ph.D. program — a terminal degree that many medical jobs and leadership positions require.
This guide covers what you can expect to encounter in a genetics master’s program, how to choose the right one, and what you can do with this degree.

How to Choose an Online Master’s in Genetics Program
When choosing an online master’s in genetics program, consider the program format, available areas of focus, cost, location, and accreditation. Researching and comparing online programs can help you find the right fit for your specific needs.
Program Format
Some programs may feature more in-person requirements than others, so keep an eye out for these while applying to schools. Additionally, if your eventual goal is to work as a medical or clinical geneticist, you’ll need a Ph.D. Therefore, you may want to look for a combined master’s-Ph.D. program. If you pursue this option, you’ll work with the same peers and professors for a longer time, building professional relationships.
Other advantages of a dual degree include the potential for extra research and funding opportunities. These programs often have rigorous application requirements, so do your best to maintain excellent undergraduate grades.
Area of Focus
Your specialization, concentration, or area of focus can impact your academic experience and career path significantly. Some genetics master’s programs may offer a general curriculum preparing you for Ph.D. admissions, while others boast specialized curricula aligned with specific jobs.
You can choose the right area of focus by considering your career goals, comparing different master’s in genetics programs, and speaking with admissions advisors.
Cost
Master’s programs can be quite expensive, with some costing upwards of $80,000 in tuition alone. Other factors that can impact the cost of a master’s program include technology fees, textbooks, and school supplies.
To help cover some of these costs, check with your school to see if you qualify for institutional funding. Graduate financial aid opportunities may include federal grants and loans. Contact your school’s financial aid office for help filling out the FAFSA.
Location
You may need to complete on-campus labs and other in-person experiences during your online master’s in genetics program. As a result, you may want to consider limiting your search to programs within commuting range or those to which you can afford to relocate.
Also, consider the pros and cons of online vs. on-campus education. The former may offer you the flexibility you need for academic success, while the latter may make in-person requirements easier to attend.
Accreditation
Limit your school search to those holding proper institutional accreditation. Accredited universities offer a rigorous educational experience that prepares you for further study or a career. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation website offers a convenient search tool you can use to check a college’s accreditation status.

Sometimes referred to as letters of intent, graduate application essays let you discuss your career goals, accomplishments, and other relevant information.Official Transcripts
Ask your school to submit official undergraduate or graduate transcripts before your online master’s in genetics program’s application deadline.
What Can You Do With a Master’s in Genetics?
Many of the best genetics programs prepare you for doctoral study, as you need a Ph.D. to work as a medical or clinical geneticist. Even so, a master’s degree on its own can open up opportunities where you can gain valuable work experience. Careers can be found in education, research, and healthcare, including:
- Genetic counselor*
- Bioinformatician
- Public health researcher or analyst
- Research associate
- Physicians’ assistant*
*Additional licensure or specialized training may be required.
How Much Can You Make With a Master’s in Genetics?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that genetic counselors earned a median salary of $89,990, as of May 2022. Additionally, epidemiologists earned $78,520.
Gaining experience, a more advanced degree, and professional certifications can raise your salary potential significantly. For example, if you choose to pursue a Ph.D., you can become a clinical geneticist. According to Payscale, these professionals earn about $120,000 per year, on average (March 2024).
Continuing Education
You’ll need a Ph.D. to qualify for many top genetics careers, such as clinical laboratory geneticist. Many states regulate these and other related positions through licensure. Requirements beyond a degree may include a certain number of years of work experience and a passing score on an examination.
As an example, clinical laboratory geneticists in California must renew their licenses every two years. Renewal requirements include taking continuing education classes and paying a fee.
