Some AP Exams Are Going Digital in 2025
- Sixteen exams will go fully virtual in May 2025, and 12 exams will be hybrid.
- The College Board plans to change eight additional exams to virtual in the future.
- The hybrid exams, which contain graphing or symbolic notation, will have exam questions online but responses in physical books.
- Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, students can access free online practice exams, quizzes, teacher-created materials, and test previews on the Bluebook app.
All Advanced Placement (AP) exams are going digital faster than expected, and the process begins in May 2025.
The College Board announced July 25 that it is discontinuing standard paper testing for 28 exams starting in 2025, going hybrid for 12 of those exams, and planning to change eight other exams in the future.
The College Board is accelerating the transition to digital AP exams after it saw a rise in “bad actors compromising AP exam content for financial gain.”
“Accelerating the digital transition will help us preserve the integrity of the AP exam experience for students and educators,” the College Board said. “We understand that this is a significant change, and we will work closely with the AP community throughout the year to ensure that schools have the information and resources they need to prepare for digital AP exams.”
Students will use the College Board’s Bluebook digital testing application supported on commonly used and school-issued devices.
The College Board’s hybrid exams, which typically require graphing or symbolic notation, will have all exam questions on the Bluebook app, while students will answer free-response questions in a paper booklet.
Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, AP students can access free online practice exams, quizzes, teacher-created assignments, and test previews on the Bluebook app. The College Board will also give loaner devices and Wi-Fi support to schools in need.
