Prospective students considering Arizona State University (ASU) law school can use ChatGPT to write their applications for them.

ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law announced July 27 that it will allow prospective students to use generative artificial intelligence (AI) like ChatGPT on applications beginning in this month to enhance legal education and break down barriers to law school. Applicants must certify that the information they submit is correct.

Our law school is driven by an innovative mindset, Stacy Leeds, the Willard H. Pedrick dean and regents professor at the law school, said in the ASU press release.

By embracing emerging technologies, and teaching students the ethical responsibilities associated with technology, we will enhance legal education and break down barriers that may exist for prospective students. By incorporating generative AI into our curriculum, we prepare students for their future careers across all disciplines.

The college called on other law schools to comprehensively embrace AI.

The ASU law school is also offering several courses examining legal, policy, and ethical AI issues in the law field. Students will explore safety, privacy, security, accountability, discrimination, liability, and AI system rights.

We are embracing this technology because we see the benefits it may bring to students and future lawyers, the press release said. Generative AI is a tool available to nearly everyone, regardless of their economic situation, that can help them submit a strong application when used responsibly.
